| Notes for Lewis J. Lynch | ||||||||||||
| Family history only states that Lewis emigrated west. Not when and where. I located the following information in various censuses. When I first followed Lewis' movement west through the census, I thought it was Laxton's son. However I was not positive. What convinced me this was Laxton's son was when I found legal document by Lewis J. Lynch on file in Rutherford County, NC (Deed Book 48, page 315, 1861). It named his brother-in law William Rucker as his lawful attorney in connection with the handling of his deceased father's goods and real estate. The convincing part was that the document was prepared in San Joaquin County, California on November 1, 1856. The US Census has Lewis (Louis) living there in 1860. This tells me Lewis and his family moved from Missouri to California between 1850 and 1856. 1840 Federal Census Pulaski County, Missouri Roll 229 Book 1 209a Lewis J. Lynch Feb,1858 WM CA mothers birthplace NC From the above infomation I conclude that this Lewis moved from North Carolina to Missouri prior to 1840. He married Melinda prior to leaving North Carolina or after arriving in Missouri. [I have not been able to find a record of the marriage]. He and Melinda lived in Missouri through the 1850 Census. They had a daughter named Mary A. while living in Missouri. They left Missouri between 1850 and 1856. In 1860 Census they appear in the St. Joaquin, California along with a son named John F. who had been born in California. Before the 1862 Nevada Territorial Census Lewis, Melinda and John moved to Carson City. Mary appears either to have died or got married prior to the move. Since Lewis did not appear in the 1870 Census, I assume he died prior to 1870 in Nevada. Melinda and John did appear in the Nevada 1880 Census. In 1900 Census John is living in Sacramento County, California. Melinda did not appear so I assume she died probably in Nevada prior to 1900 . I have found no record on John after 1900. | ||||||||||||
